Shared banking hub will replace Lloyds bank when it close next year

The company behind the UK's cashpoint network has announced Glossop will get its own banking hub when the town's branch of Lloyds closes next year.

LINK has confirmed that the town will benefit from a new banking hub as part of a wider commitment to protect access to cash and to provide a service for those unwilling to use online banking services.

The hub will have a counter service run by Post Office staff where customers of any of the major banks can withdraw and deposti cash as well as paying bills.

There will also be a private space where customers can speak to representatives from their own bank. Individual banks will work on a rotating basis with different staff from different banks on different days.

Glossop's will be the sixth banking hub in Derbyshire. There are 105 hubs open nationwide.

The hub will be delivered by Cash Access UK which will be looking at possible sites over the coming weeks.

Dr Chris Ashton, Chief Commercial Officer, LINK: “While more people are choosing to bank and pay for things digitally, we know that many people still rely and choose to use cash and face-to-face banking. That’s why we’re delighted to recommend a new hub in Glossop.

"There are over one hundred hubs open across the country and when it opens, the Glossop banking hub will be vital for the local community and high street.”

The closure of Lloyds, announced this week, will leave Glossop without a bank.

The bank on High Street West is among scores of branches set to be axed by the banking giant this year throughout the UK.

And bosses claim the rise of online banking has been a major factor in their decision.

A spokesman said: "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch.

"Most customers are now using our Mobile Banking app, Internet Banking or calling us instead, which means they are using branches much less. Because of this, we'll be closing our Glossop branch."
