Fit for a Prince - Theatre celebrates royal honour

Hyde Little Theatre is celebrating after being named as a recipient of the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The honour is the highest award for volunteer organisations and equivalent to an MBE.

The theatre group is one of a number locally to receive the award and among just 281  across the nation to be given the honour.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service recognises outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities.

Created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty The late Queen’s Golden Jubilee, it was continued following the accession of His Majesty The King. This year marks the second year of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Representatives of Hyde Little Theatre will attend a special ceremony when they will be presented with the award crystal and certificate from Diane Hawkins, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. In addition, two volunteers from Hyde Little Theatre will be given the opportunity to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May or June of next year, alongside other recipients of this year’s award.

Chair of HLT Vanessa Rothwell, said: “We are over the moon about this recognition. We have been on a fantastic journey over the last few years, expanding the range of events and activities at our HQ Studio 9 to meet the needs of our local community.

“We couldn’t have achieved this award without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, but also the continued support from everyone who promotes and attends our events, purchases tickets for our productions, comes for lunch at Studio 9, and enjoys all that Hyde Little Theatre offers.

“They are all a part of this journey and achievement. We can’t wait to do even more in 2025, so thank you everyone for your support.”

Hyde Little Theatre volunteer committee member Karen Abaelu explained a wide range of events and volunteering opportunities exist at Studio 9, the theatre group’s home on Market Street.

“We have a range of activities including adult and youth theatre provision, a community lunch club, baby and tots groups plus a group for teenagers with special needs, providing a safe space for them.

“As well as running all of our different groups there is lots of behind the scenes administration to do, marketing and social media management, plus organising and being involved in our own shows in front of and behind the stage.”

The group has also been bringing more visiting professional shows to its venue. Exciting plans to expand the offer available at Studio 9 are also on the cards.
