Diversity Matters North West, an award-winning independent charity based in Tameside, brought together volunteers, partners, and supporters last week for a special Volunteer Celebration Event.
Founded in 2007, the organisation works to tackle health inequalities, reduce social exclusion, and promote community cohesion, delivering community-led programmes that support people to improve their wellbeing, develop skills, and access new opportunities. Activities range from health and wellbeing support to learning, training, and volunteering, all designed to empower individuals and strengthen communities.
Celebrating the Power of Volunteers
Last week marked the charity’s annual celebration, where 60+ volunteers were recognised for their outstanding contributions. The event provided a valuable opportunity to thank volunteers and reflect on the vital role they play across the organisation’s work. From supporting community programmes to helping deliver outreach, training, and peer-led initiatives, volunteers remain at the heart of Diversity Matters North West. Their commitment and passion continue to extend the reach and impact of the organisation, helping to create inclusive, supportive environments where individuals can thrive.
The event was honoured by the attendance of Tameside Civic Mayor, Cllr. Helen Bowden, who joined in celebrating the achievements of volunteers. The Mayor was deeply moved by the powerful personal journeys shared and assisted in presenting certificates and awards to recognise the dedication and progress of the volunteers.
Special recognition was given through three headline awards:
- Volunteer of the Year – Fahmeeda Chowdhry
- Excellent Volunteer Award – Samavia Razzaq and Joyti Akter
Guests also enjoyed a warm and celebratory atmosphere, with a wonderful lunch prepared by two former volunteers who now run their own businesses, demonstrating the life-changing opportunities that can grow from volunteering. The celebration concluded with shared food and cake, bringing everyone together to mark the occasion.
The event itself was filled with inspiring stories and shared experiences, highlighting the difference volunteering makes not only to the people supported, but also to the volunteers themselves, many of whom go on to progress into further opportunities, training, and employment.
"Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their passion and commitment help us reach more people and create lasting change in our communities. This celebration was a small way of saying a very big thank you." Lina Patel MBE Chair of Board of Trustees DMNW
Demonstrating Real Impact Across Communities
Building on this celebration of people and community, the event also marked the launch of Diversity Matters North West’s latest Social Impact Report, showcasing the organisation’s measurable achievements for 2024-2025.

£50,000 Investment to Expand Community Impact
In a further major announcement, Diversity Matters North West shared that it has been awarded £50,000 from the Postcode Community Fund, providing a significant boost to its future work.
The funding will support the organisation to build on its strong track record and expand programmes that improve health and wellbeing, increase access to learning and employment, and strengthen community voice and inclusion.
This investment comes at a crucial time, enabling the charity to reach more people, respond to increasing demand, and continue delivering culturally sensitive, community-led services that make a real difference.
