The primary school raises money through hosting a range of events throughout the school year.

This year, all the students at Denton West End Primary School raised £15,826 for The Christie Charity.

Sharron White, headteacher at Denton West End said: “Many children, even at such a young age, have some knowledge of The Christie as family members have visited or been for treatment. This is one reason why the children voted for the charity.

“We have not held a sponsored spell for some time, and felt we could raise money and do some learning at the same time through the Christie Bear Challenge. Our pupils love a challenge, and this amount raised shows what great sports they are.

"We are incredibly grateful to the pupils and wider community for enabling us to support this incredibly important charity, which touches so many people’s lives.”

The school hosted Christmas jumper days, discos, bake sales, break the rules days and non-uniform events to fundraise for The Christie.

On 7th May, the school hosted an assembly and a cheque handover, where Christie Bear surprised the children.

Jen Kent, Community Fundraising Officer at The Christie Charity said: “We are so grateful for the incredible support shown by the pupils, staff, and wider community of the Denton West End Primary School. The enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment the children have shown - from choosing The Christie to organising such imaginative fundraising events – is truly inspiring.

“It’s wonderful to see young people engaging so confidently with important causes, and we’re touched that so many of them already understand the impact The Christie has on patients and families. Their efforts will make a real difference, and we can’t thank them enough for supporting a charity so close to the hearts of many.”

Every year each child from Key Stage Two at Denton West End Primary School has the opportunity to choose a charity and then present their idea to their class.

The class then votes on a winner, who will then present to the whole school in an assembly, individually or in teams.

It is then down to the children from Y1 to Y6 to vote for their preferred charity.

The children can present their ideas however they like, some of them create posters, write speeches or make PowerPoint presentations to present in front of the whole school and answer questions about their chosen charity.

The school encourages children through the project as part of their British Values curriculum, which teaches the children about democracy in the UK.

Denton West End Primary School hosts these fundraisers often and, in the past, have raised money for World Wildlife Fund, Two Brews, the Dogs Trust, Manchester Children’s Hospital and the Denton Community Library.
