Buckton Vale Primary staff member awarded British Empire Medal in King's Birthday Honours

A dedicated kinship carer from Tameside who opened her home to her nieces has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours with a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Claire Robinson, Kitchen Manager at Buckton Vale Primary School, part of Victorious Academies Trust, has received the honour in recognition of her commitment to providing a loving and stable home for her nieces alongside raising her own three children.

Claire began her fostering journey four years ago when she became a kinship carer for her nieces. Throughout the process, she remained firmly focused on the children's needs, taking time to understand the role, access the support available and ensure that she could provide the best possible care.

As a dedicated advocate for her nieces, Claire recognised the importance of maintaining their sibling bond and ensuring they remained part of a loving family network. The children thrived in her care, benefiting from the stability, security and support she provided.

In May 2025, Claire secured a Special Guardianship Order for both children, providing them with a permanent home as part of her family.

Speaking about the award, Claire said:

"I was over the moon to be given this special honour. Seeing my nieces grow in confidence, happiness and security has been the greatest reward and I am incredibly proud of the young people they are becoming. Kinship care and fostering can make a life-changing difference for children, giving them the love, stability and opportunities they deserve. At a time when more foster carers are needed than ever, I hope my experience encourages others to find out more about the support they can provide to children and families in their communities."

The honour was announced as part of the King's Birthday Honours list. As part of the recognition, Claire will receive her British Empire Medal at a special ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor of Manchester and has also been invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this summer, hosted by His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen.

Phil Bevan, Catering Business Officer at Victorious Academies Trust, said:

"This award is wonderful recognition and comes as no surprise to those who know Claire. Her hard work, resilience and commitment to others are evident every day. The difference she has made to her nieces' lives is remarkable and everyone at Buckton Vale Primary School and across Victorious Academies Trust is delighted to see her dedication recognised with this well-deserved honour.”
