A Tameside arts centre is holding a big garden bug build and local people are invited to get involved.
For six weeks from Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Friends of The Vale will be running free creative workshops at The Vale, in Mossley. Working together with artist Mel Roberts, the group will create a series of friendly 3D bugs to bring "life, fun and whimsy" to the arts centre's community garden.
The exuberant insects will be built using repurposed and found objects including wire, resin and textiles. Everyone joining the workshops, known as Wednesday Welcome, will have the opportunity to learn new crafting skills and techniques as well as meet new people.
And although the free sessions will be led by Roberts, participants are invited to bring their own ideas about what they would like to make.
The freelance artist, from Mossley, is best known for creating giant walkabout puppets for The Vale's resident Carnival arts organisation Global Grooves. Amongst her designs, which are regularly seen at street events around Tamesside and beyond, are Ukrainian Carnival Queen Sofiya, Nandi the bull, Manny the dancer and a cheeky green-faced Christmas elf.
Jane Harris, community engagement lead, The Vale, said: "Come along, have fun, meet others and make something wonderfully unusual!
"This is a really fun and engaging project for the autumn months and the creations will become part of a colourful display in our community garden.
"Participants will work both individually and collectively to build an impression collection of minibeasts. Essentially, it's a chance to explore materials, learn skills and techniques and be part of creating something wonderful to bring cheer to our garden area".
The project is part-funded by the UK Government through the Economic Development and Regeneration Flexible Grant (ED&RFG) programme and Greater Manchester Arts funding.
Every Saturday morning, a free session called Our Space offers another opportunity to enjoy The Vale's community gardens. Seasonal activities are suitable for all ages and include planting, building and making.
The six free Wednesday Welcome sessions will run from 21 October-25 November 2026 from 12.30-3pm. No experience is necessary. Sessions are free and open to all adults. Donations are welcome.
