Mini police event at primary school hailed a huge success

Youngsters at a local primary school are leading the way in stamping out anti-social behaviour - thanks to a mini police project.

Pupils at Beever Primary School on Moorby Street, were selected to take part in the event in a bid to make the area safer for children, staff and parents.

Headteacher, Nicola Edwards, who has worked tirelessly with the police to tackle anti-social behaviour around the area surrounding the school over the past few months, said the pupils, aged from nine-11, went through a robust recruitment process to be selected.

She said: “The project was held in partnership with the school and the police to send out a positive message within the community and promote social responsibility among young people.

“It was also a chance for our children to improve relationships with the police and it has been a huge success as they have really embraced it.”

So far, the children have been educated on the dangers of knife crime, road safety and have an upcoming hate awareness session.

Mrs Edwards added: “We worked with PCSO Andy Bigland who held the drop-in sessions to empower children and spread the good message.

“The children have been learning about the importance of road safety, speed radar and the Green Cross Code. They then planned an assembly where they were able to present what they had learnt to the school.”

As part of the mini police project, the children have been educating parents and taxi drivers on how to drive safely around the school area.
