More landslip delays on New Mills Central railway line

The completion date for repairs to the railway line through Hague Bar has been put back by a month.

Trains have been unable to use the route since a landslip in March, and despite initially being expected to re-open by the end of August, Network Rail now say works will continue until at least September 22.

“Network Rail’s initial estimate was that the repairs would be completed in August. During the repairs, engineers discovered more complex issues with the drainage,” says a statement from the company.

“As a result, five state-of-the-art drainage chambers are required to be built under the railway to collect excess water and direct it to the River Goyt.

“These will last for 120 years and will mean that the railway is more resilient to climate change.”

On the Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills Central line, trains will run every hour from Manchester Piccadilly to Marple all week, with replacement bus services picking up the journey from Marple to Chinley.

Rail replacement buses will run the route from Manchester Piccadilly, Bredbury, Marple and Chinley on Sundays.

Northern Rail trains to Sheffield will still divert via Stockport and Hazel Grove, with a rail replacement bus shuttling between Marple and Chinley.
