Heavy Salad
Band of the week on Tameside Radio's Local Music Spotlight feature are Heavy Salad. Heavy Salad proudly create a melting pot of melodic, psychedelic pop music infused with the bands eclectic love of surf rock, fuzzed up punk funk and cosmic gospel-tinged folk.
The band were formed in Manchester in 2018 by Lee Mann on bass and vocals, Rob Glennie on lead guitar, and Allan Hutchison on drums. The band soon blossomed into a seven piece with Oscar Remers-Tootle on guitar and synth, and 'The Priestesses' Ally Boo, Esther Maylor and Lucy Hope adding their unique and soulful vocals to the mix. Having released their debut LP and a string of singles, Heavy Salad have been receiving a great deal of radio play throughout the UK and have been busy working on their second and third albums.
Both albums are being worked on with producers Christophe Bride in Manchester, and with the legendary Blur / The Smiths producer Stephen Street at The Bunker in Damon Albarn’s Studio 13 in London and features guest musicians Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson of iconic Factory Records band ‘A Certain Ratio’.
The albums, named 'Long Wave Part 1' and 'Long Wave Part 2', build on the Heavy Salad sound adding sounds of dub, electro-pop, exotica, lounge, bossa nova, afrobeat and Morricone-esque soundtrack sounds to their sonic palette with the group sharing lead vocals amongst the bands talented vocalists.
Taking inspiration from their love of long sprawling albums, band favourites such as The Beatles 'White album', Beastie Boys 'Hello Nasty', Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk' and 'Sandinista' by The Clash, 'Long Wave Part’s 1 and 2' albums can be described as Heavy Salad’s very own mixtape.
Not only have Heavy Salad written and recorded both albums, they have also been busy back out on the road, touring with PINS and cult Manchester band The Chameleons, as well as playing notable festivals such as SXSW in Austin Texas, Manchester Psych Fest and Party in The Pews, as well as two successful headline UK tours of their own. Heavy Salad are a unique band with a huge following and will be played on every weekday show on Tameside Radio between 6am and 7pm all of next week.
The band also joined the team on The Dave Sweetmore Show last Monday night, you can listen again via the OnDemand section of the website.
